What Is HYROX? A San Antonio Guide to the Fitness Race

August 10, 20263 min read

If HYROX keeps showing up in your feed and you are still not totally sure what it is, you are not alone. It is one of the fastest growing fitness events in the world, with sold-out races in packed arenas across the US and Europe... and it now has a real training home here in San Antonio.

The short answer

HYROX is a fitness race. Every athlete completes the exact same format: run 1 kilometer, then complete a workout station. Then do it again. Eight runs and eight stations total, always in the same order, in every city in the world.

That consistency is the magic of it. Because the course never changes, your finish time means something. You can compare it to your training partner's, to athletes in London or Chicago, and most importantly to your own time from last season.

How a HYROX race works

After each 1km run, you hit the next station in this order:

  • 1,000m SkiErg

  • 50m Sled Push

  • 50m Sled Pull

  • 80m Burpee Broad Jumps

  • 1,000m Row

  • 200m Farmers Carry

  • 100m Sandbag Lunges

  • Wall Balls (75 to 100 reps depending on division)

Most first-timers finish somewhere between 90 minutes and two hours. Elite athletes go under an hour. Either way, you cross the same finish line, and the atmosphere in those arenas is something special.

Who HYROX is for

Honest answer: more people than you would think. There are no highly technical movements in HYROX... no barbell snatches, no muscle-ups, nothing that takes months just to learn safely. Every station is a simple human movement: push, pull, carry, lunge, jump, throw, run.

The challenge is not skill. It is pacing and engine. If you can jog and carry a pair of kettlebells, you can start training today, and the divisions scale the weights so you compete against people in your own category.

The divisions, quickly

  • Open: the standard weights. Where most people start.

  • Pro: heavier loads for experienced racers.

  • Doubles: you and a partner split the station work and both run. The most popular way to do a first race.

  • Relay: a team of four splits everything. Pure fun.

Where do you actually race?

HYROX events run in major cities around the world, and Texans typically race in Dallas or Houston, with new US cities added every season. The play most of our athletes run: train consistently here in San Antonio, then turn race weekend into a road trip with your training crew.

Where to train for HYROX in San Antonio

Here is the part most people in town do not know yet. CrossFit Born Ready in Helotes is an Official HYROX Training Club, one of the few in the San Antonio area. That is not a marketing phrase... it is a license from HYROX itself, and it means the training space is purpose-built for the race: sleds, SkiErgs, rowers, wall ball targets, and marked lanes, plus daily HYROX programming from PRVN.

The HYROX membership is $100 a month and includes open gym access and coached classes, with race simulations to get you ready for the real thing. You can see all the details on our HYROX Training page or compare options on our membership page.

Curious? Come see it

The best way to understand HYROX is to stand in the space and push a sled once. Come visit us in Helotes, jump into a coached class, and find out what race-day fitness feels like. Book your first visit here... we will take care of the rest.
