Your First Week of CrossFit in Helotes: What to Expect
Walking into a CrossFit gym for the first time is the hardest part. Not the workout. The door.
We get it, because every coach at CrossFit Born Ready was a member first. So here is exactly what your first week with us in Helotes looks like, from the moment you fill out the form to the morning after your first class when the stairs feel a little taller.
What happens before your first CrossFit class?
You start with a free intro, not a workout. Fill out the short form on our Get Started page and pick a time for your intro.
At the intro, you tour the gym, meet a coach and talk about two things: where you are right now and where you want to be. That conversation is honest in both directions. We want to know if we can actually help you, and you should find out if we are the right fit for you.
You also do not get thrown into a group class cold. New members start with our intro on-ramp, which walks you through the basic movements and habits before you join the group. Think of it as learning the language before the conversation.
What does a CrossFit class actually look like?
Every class is 60 minutes, and a coach leads all of it. Here is the flow:
Warm-up together. It is built to wake up the muscles that day's workout will use.
The brief. The coach walks the group through the workout, the movements and what good form looks like.
The workout. You train, and the coach moves around the room cueing, correcting and pushing.
Cool-down. Everyone finishes together and brings the heart rate back down.
The workouts change day to day. Some days are strength focused, with movements like barbell squats and kettlebell swings. Some days lean on cardio and conditioning with rowers and bikes. Some days are bodyweight work like push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups. Plenty of days mix all three.
If you want the bigger picture of the method itself, CrossFit's own overview of what CrossFit is is a good read before your intro.
Do I need to be in shape before I start?
No. Most of our members started right where you are.
Every workout at Born Ready is universally scaled. That means there is a version of each day's workout for every level, and your coach helps you pick the right one. Can't do a pull-up yet? There is a version for that. Never touched a barbell? You will start light and learn the movement first. As you get stronger, you move up to harder versions when you are ready, not before.
Jazmin, one of our members, put the nerves part better than we can:
"I was scared to start because coming into a new place is scary but everyone is welcoming in both morning and evening classes."
That is the point of the first week. You show up nervous and leave knowing a few names.
How many classes should I take in my first week?
Two or three is the sweet spot. For beginners we usually recommend 2 to 4 classes a week, and 3 is a great place to start.
Give yourself a rest day between sessions at first. Over the next few months you can work up toward more days if you want to, but consistency beats volume early on. Three classes a week for a month will do more for you than six classes in week one and none in week two.
Will I be sore after my first CrossFit workout?
Probably, and that is normal. Most people feel it a day or two after their first few classes, especially in the legs.
A few things help:
Keep moving. A walk around the neighborhood on your rest day beats the couch.
Use the gym's tools. We have foam rollers and bands for stretching before and after class.
Eat and sleep like it matters. Ask your coach. Nutrition and recovery guidance is part of what we do.
Soreness and pain are not the same thing. Muscle soreness is a dull, all-over ache that fades. Sharp pain, joint pain or anything that feels wrong is a reason to stop and tell your coach. If you have an injury, a heart or blood pressure condition, are pregnant, or have been told to limit exercise, talk to your doctor before you start and tell your coach at the intro so we can plan around it.
What should I bring to my first class?
Keep it simple:
Athletic clothes you can move in
Training shoes (flat, stable sneakers work fine)
A water bottle. Even in a Helotes November, you will want it.
That is it. We have the equipment. If you are training before work, we have bathrooms and showers so you can head straight to the office, plus a ladies locker room. Bringing the kids along? There is a kids area so parents can still get their hour in.
Which class time should I pick?
Pick one time you can repeat, and stick with it for the first couple of weeks.
We run CrossFit classes from early morning through the evening on weekdays, plus weekend classes. The class schedule has the current times. Once you are a member, you book classes on our app.
Coming to the same time slot early on has a quiet benefit. You see the same coach and the same faces, and by the end of week two people are asking where you were if you miss a day. That is usually when it stops feeling like a new gym and starts feeling like your gym.
Where are you, and who will be coaching me?
We are at 13302 Western Oak in Helotes, on the northwest side of San Antonio near UTSA. Plenty of our members come in from Alamo Ranch, Leon Valley and the Bandera Road corridor, and most are about 15 minutes or less from our door.
Our coaches were members before they were coaches, and many of them train right alongside you. You can read their backgrounds and certifications on our team page before your intro, so you walk in already knowing a couple of names.
Here for HYROX instead? Our dedicated HYROX floor is part of the same Helotes location, and the first step is the same free intro.
Frequently asked questions
Is the intro session at CrossFit Born Ready free?
Yes. Your first step is a free intro session. You tour the gym, meet a coach and talk through your goals and current fitness. It is a two-way conversation to see whether we are a good fit for each other. Book it from our Get Started page.
Is CrossFit safe for beginners?
CrossFit with good coaching is built for beginners too. Our coaches put form first and scale every workout to your level, so you build strength gradually. If you have an injury or a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting and tell your coach at the intro so the workouts can be adjusted for you.
How many times a week should a beginner do CrossFit?
Start with 2 to 4 classes a week, and 3 is a strong first target. Leave a rest day between sessions early on so your body can recover. After a few months of steady training, you can build toward more days if you want to. Consistency matters far more than squeezing in extra classes.
What should I wear to my first CrossFit class?
Wear athletic clothes you can move freely in and flat, stable training shoes. Bring a water bottle. That is all you need, since we provide the equipment. We also have bathrooms and showers if you are heading to work afterward, and a ladies locker room.
Can I bring my kids while I work out?
Yes. Our facility has a kids area so parents can get their workout in. If you have questions about ages or what the space looks like, ask during your free intro and we will show you around.
Ready for day one?
