HYROX Training Plan: How to Prepare for Your First Race in San Antonio

HYROX Training Plan: How to Prepare for Your First Race in San Antonio

August 10, 20263 min read

So you signed up for a HYROX race... or you are about to. Good. Here is the thing nobody tells you: you do not need a perfect plan or a year of prep. You need 8 to 12 weeks of consistent, race-specific training. This is how we structure it for first-time racers at Born Ready.

Step 1: Pick your race and count backward

Everything gets easier with a date on the calendar. Most of our athletes race in Dallas or Houston, so pick an event 8 to 12 weeks out and work backward. Eight weeks is enough if you already train regularly. Twelve is better if you are starting from mostly couch.

The weekly structure that works

You do not need to train seven days a week. Four focused sessions beat six random ones:

  • 2 engine days: running intervals and machine work (SkiErg, rower). Think 1km repeats at your goal race pace, because that is literally the race.

  • 1 to 2 strength days: sleds, carries, lunges, wall balls. Build the muscles the race actually taxes.

  • 1 hybrid day: combine running with stations, back to back, the way the race does.

Then sleep and eat like it matters, because it does.

Train "compromised running" on purpose

The single biggest surprise in a first HYROX: running on legs that just pushed a sled. Your easy jog pace disappears fast. So practice it. Push a heavy sled, then immediately run 800m. Row hard, then run. Teaching your legs to run tired is the most race-specific fitness there is, and it is hard to fake on race day.

The stations that humble people

  • Sled push and pull: heavier than they sound. Practice with race weights so there is no surprise.

  • Burpee broad jumps:80 meters is farther than you think. Pace from the first rep.

  • Wall balls: they come last, on tired legs, 75 to 100 reps. Break them into planned sets before your arms decide for you.

Race simulations are the secret weapon

Nothing prepares you like a practice race. A simulation teaches you pacing, transitions, and what your body actually does at station six... lessons you want to learn in the gym, not in an arena. We run full and partial race sims regularly in our HYROX space, with real sleds, marked lanes, and a coach watching your pacing.

What a training week looks like at Born Ready

If you would rather not write your own plan, you do not have to. Our HYROX membership includes daily HYROX programming from PRVN, so you just show up and follow the plan. A typical week:

  • Coached classes: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 6 to 7am, Wednesday and Friday 6 to 7pm, Saturday 8 to 9am.

  • Open gym: Monday through Friday 5 to 6am, 8:30am to 1pm, and 4 to 7pm, plus Saturday 9 to 10:30am and Sunday 10:30 to 11:30am.

Two coached sessions plus two open gym sessions a week is a legitimate first-race build. All of it is included in the $100/month HYROX membership.

First-race mistakes to skip

  • Only running, or only lifting. HYROX punishes specialists. Train both.

  • Going out too hot. The first 1km feels easy. Bank nothing... even pacing wins.

  • Never touching a sled before race day. Please do not do this.

  • New shoes on race morning. Race in what you trained in.

Ready to start your build?

Eight weeks from now you could be crossing a finish line in an arena with a few thousand people cheering. It starts with one visit. Check out our HYROX Training page for the full schedule and membership details, or book your first session here and we will map out your race build together.
